During the AMA expo January 2018, it was announced that the show was being moved to the Pomona Fairplex and would also occur in November. Well, needless to say, November arrived before I could blink and it was time to start thinking about the show! This time around, kicking off the new venue, the AMA reached out asking about doing some how-to clinics throughout the weekend. The idea I had was to provide some weathering how-to’s on a couple airplanes through the course of the weekend and then on Sunday afternoon, give those airplanes away. Well, thanks to the AMA and Horizon Hobby, we were able to make that happen and it was a great time. Horizon Hobby donated an E-Flite P-51 and an FMS Yak-130 for me to work on during the weekend which we gave away on Sunday afternoon.
This year, I had a full booth and through the course of the weekend, I was showing weathering techniques on the donated airplanes provided by Horizon Hobby. For one of the clinics, I was able to do a weathering session on the main stage for the purposes of recording video. Below is the end result as well as a few pictures of the finished airplanes. The techniques mentioned in the video kind of run through the gamut of what I like to employ when I’m weathering up an airplane and are applicable to any medium of aircraft foam, glass or otherwise not to mention any size. Plus we have nearly 300 direct subscribers to this website! Thank you all of you! My hope in starting this site was to help folks out there and provide the best information that I can and promote scale modeling which such an amazing part of the hobby. I really appreciate each of you taking the time to watch and read these articles.
Well, as many of you SoCal folks may have seen, the AMA Expo West Expo this year is on a new date and location! This year the show will be at the Pomona Fairplex from November 2nd through the 4th. The fair grounds really lends itself well for this kind of show as it has a lot of out door space for flying and other fun activities. So, in combination with the AMA and Horizon Hobby, I will be exhibiting at the show this year and providing some weathering and finishing clinics throughout the weekend. Horizon Hobby has graciously donated this E-Flite P-51 and this FMS Yak-130 as the airframes to be used for those clinics and so I will be showing a few techniques throughout the weekend. I will be doing a full weathering job on each and then, at the end of the show on Sunday, we will be giving those airplanes away! It is absolutely free to enter and you don’t have to be present to win. All it requires is to stop by the booth to pick up an entry form and collect a couple stamps around the show. Again, it’s completely free to enter and the winner will be announced on Sunday November 4th at the show. A big thank you to Horizon Hobby again for donating these awesome airframes also thank you to the AMA for making this happen! I will be at the show all weekend in booth 359, so be sure to stop by to enter and say hi while you’re there!
Ok, so free airplanes, how could it get better? Well, as a special thanks to my subscribers since obviously not all can make it to the AMA show, Robo3D has graciously donated an R1+ 3D printer to give away! This giveaway is open to all subscribers of my YouTube channel as a thank you! This giveaway for the printer is all being done through gleam, so check below and follow the directions to enter. You must be a subscriber to enter and there are some other ways to enter too to increase your chances. The winner of this printer will be selected on Tuesday November 13 which is the second Tuesday after the AMA show. So, a big thank you to Robo 3D for this amazing prize!
Good luck to all of you and I look forward to seeing you guys at the AMA Expo!
Another year, and another AMA West Expo show! Catching up with old friends and seeing what’s new is always the name of the game and there was certainly plenty of that! The big news this year was that the expo will be held in a new location next year (which will actually be this November), the Pomona Fair Grounds (promo vid at the end of this article). This should be a nice change for the show as it will allow significantly more outdoor activities including flying, racing and all that other good stuff that we can only get limited doses of in Ontario. For the show itself, there was a nice assortment of vendors as there always is, but there seems to be a bit of turnover in the hobby right now. Some of the old stand-by vendors and shops don’t seem to be standing by as much as they used to and newer vendors seem to come and go. Hopefully this new location will help re-invigorate things a bit and bring in some additional interest and vendors!
For me this year, I was only able to make it on the Saturday so I setup shop with a couple airplanes on display in the Scale Squadron booth. I didn’t think the bring Lady Alice last year, so I brought it along with our kit bashed Kfir which fit well within the booth. There was also on hand an absolutely gorgeously built F3D Skynight in work by Rob Han (his own design). I’ve known Rob for a long time and he has always done some really ingenious work. He actually plans to run the airplane with a geared glow engine driving two ducted fans. I of course told him EDF would be far simpler! 😉
When January rolls around, that always means it’s AMA Expo time! It’s hard to believe that’s it’s actually been a year already since the last show. Every year the expo is held at the Ontario Convention Center and features a bunch of vendors and manufacturers in the RC industry so it’s always an interesting show to head to. It’s more than that though. The RC community is like a family, so the show feels almost like a reunion as I get a chance to catch up with friends that I don’t get to see but just once or twice a year plus meeting new friends too.
This year, I was honored to be asked by the AMA to be one of the presenters for the show. Truth be told, when the AMA asked me to speak at the show, I was humbled by the opportunity. I’ve been coming to this show since I was a kid and as I mentioned in my article about this show last year, I even met my wife at this show 15 years ago if you can even believe that! But, to share the presenters stage with so many amazing people is something I never imagined truthfully. The AMA was cool enough to video and provide my presentation to post on my YouTube channel, so here it is in case you missed it!cheap viagraContinue reading →
We have a quick post this week as I have two announcements! One of my go to events every year is the AMA West RC Expo at the Ontario Convention center. Well, the Academy of Model Aeronautics has graciously asked if I would be a presenter at the show this year. So I will be at the expo all weekend long sharing my story with you, my background and why I started this site. Plus we’ll have a nice display of jets including my Scale Masters winning Mirage IIIRS. So, I want to encourage you guys to come on out to the event and stop by and say hi! I love meeting you guys and it’s going to be an awesome weekend. The dates for the event are January 6-8.
For the second announcement, we are doing our first giveaway! A while back I reviewed the Eleven Hobby Bearcat and so we are giving that review airplane away. To enter, all you have to do is to watch the above video and follow the instructions below. There are multiple chances to win, so be sure to take advantage of each one! The winner will be chosen on January 9 and I will be announcing the winner Tuesday January 10 which is the Tuesday after the AMA expo so be sure to share this video and get the word out! It’s a free airplane and it’s completely free to enter.
I look forward to seeing you guys at the AMA Expo!
AMA EXPO 2016 — The place to geek out on the latest in RC!
Ah, the AMA Expo. Heralded at the Ontario Convention center, it’s a great show to geek out on everything RC while scoring deals you wouldn’t normally get on RC products. Though not always known as the AMA show, nor held at the Ontario Convention Center, this show has been ongoing in Southern California for a long time. I remember attending a different incarnation of the show as a kid with my dad. In fact, I even met my wife at this show when it was still held in Pasadena…wrap your heads around that one, haha! It’s really hard to believe just how much the hobby has changed and I’ve watched it change each year through this show! Even in just the last 10 years things have changed so much.
Now, an RC trade show means many things to many people. For most however, it means three things — scoring deals while seeing what’s new and exciting and catching up with cheap viagraContinue reading →
